The 4th of July is just around the corner, and I was trying to think of something fun and simple we could do. We are huge straw shooter fans, so I thought I’d modify it a bit for the 4th of July. With a little ribbon and some washi tape we transformed our straw shooters into Firework Rockets. This project is a great STEAM project, fun for little creatives and definitely fills a big creatives cup… sooooo many possiblities. The brighter, sparklier and crazier the better. Happy Independence Day!
FIREWORK ROCKET SUPPLIES:

- Big Straws (Boba or Smoothie Straws)
- Regular Drinking Straws
- White or Colored Paper
- Tape
- Scissors
- School Glue or Glue Gun
- Washi Tape – We used metallic
- Ribbon, String, Yarn or Material Scraps
MAKE IT:
1. CUT your big straw, approximately 6-8cm or 2-3 inches.
2. TAPE the top of your big straw off, per the pictures below.
3. ADD ribbon. Cut a piece of tape, approximately the length to wrap around the big straw 1 time. Then cut your ribbon and stick it to the tape.
4. WRAP the ribboned tape around the straw and press to stick. If its not sticking wrap another piece of tape around.
If you want to add another layer of ribbon repeat the step above.
5. FINISH up the bottom of the rocket by adding a layer of washi tape around the taped ribbon.
If you are really in the groove and getting your craftiness on, you can also glue on additional ribbon, like we did below with the blue ribbon. Just go for it!
6. CUT a circle out of your paper, a little larger than a quarter, or roughly 3.5cm / 1.5 inches in diameter. This will be the ‘roof’ of our rocket.
7. CUT a slit from the edge to the middle of the circle and slide the edges over each other to create a little roof.
8. TAPE the inside of the roof, then glue the outside down.
9. DECORATE the roof if you’d like. We painted and added some string (my niece’s idea!).
9. GLUE the roof on the firework body. Put a ring of hot glue (or regular glue) around the rim of the big straw and glue on the roof. If you use regular glue you’ll need to leave it somewhere un-touched long enough for the glue to dry.
10. REPEAT for as many firework rockets as you want!
Here is our assortment of fire works!
10. BLAST OFF! Put your firework on the end of your straw and blow to blast your firework in the air. Shoot for the stars!
MY TAKE AWAY:
This would be a great little project to set up for a 4th of July party. We all went to town on our firework rockets! I thought this would be a simple project that I would put together quickly then give to my little creatives to play with, but it turned into a lovely family affair craft session. Such fun!

Today, I went to the beach front with my kids. I found
a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to
her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off
topic but I had to tell someone!
ha! that’s amazing, I can’t blame her, that must have been a scary experience! One I hope she’ll laugh about in the future and never forget!
