Cork Charm Necklace

We love making wearable art, we also love recycling. Our stack of wine corks has been growing and it was finally time to put them to good use. I thought it would be fun to turn them into cork charms. They could be used for necklaces, bracelets, earrings, or keychains.

MAKE IT:

1. CUT your wine corks into sections, as wide as you’d like. This should done by an adult with a sharp knife on a cutting board.

2. PAINT the sections of wine cork. My daughter painted hers one color and I painted mine to look like sections of fruit. Then we added a sparkly coat of paint which worked as a varnish, but you can use a clear varnish as well if you want it to have a glossy look.

DISCUSS: What are some other ways you could decorate your cork? We tried monogram stamping, as well as sticking jewels on them. What else is circular like slices of fruit?

3. TWIST your eye screw into the top of the cork. It screws in surprisingly easily, just by twisting with your hand.

4. ACCESSORIZE your necklace or bracelet. Choose your twine, chain or ribbon and gather the beads that you’d like to use together.

5. LAYOUT your necklace before stringing it.

6. WEAR IT! Flaunt your DIY away. Below you can see me and my daughter modeling ours.

MY TAKE AWAY:

This project works great for a whole bunch of ages. I made one along side my 4 year old daughter, painting and creative time with her is always so magical. She made 8 charms, 1 for herself and 7 for her school friends. Then her 11 & 12 year old cousins made some too. So simple, so fun.
